In June 2024, the UN presented the Global Principles for Information Integrity, emphasizing the need for unprecedented collaboration between governments, technology companies, the media, and advertisers on a global scale to combat disinformation and hate speech amplified by artificial intelligence. Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the need to create a safe information environment that respects human rights.
The principles focus on four main areas:
Information Governance: Establishing global norms and standards to guarantee the veracity and quality of information.
Capacity Building: Strengthening people's abilities to recognize and combat disinformation.
Partnerships: Cooperation between different sectors to implement effective measures against disinformation.
Technology and Innovation: Using advanced technologies to detect and mitigate the spread of false information.
These guidelines respond to the growing manipulation of information online, with the aim of promoting healthy public discourse and protecting the integrity of information.
The UN believes that implementing these principles will help effectively address the challenges of disinformation, contributing to a safer and more trustworthy digital future.
