On March 30, 2023, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) launched the Trustworthy and Responsible AI Resource Center to facilitate implementation and international alignment on the issue of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). On June 22, 2023, the Biden-Harris Administration announced the creation of a new NIST public working group on Generative AI. This public working group works to develop vital guidance to help organizations deal with the unique risks associated with generative AI technologies and builds on the success of the NIST AI Risk Management Framework in dealing with this rapidly advancing technology. LABSUL participated in the discussions of this Public Working Group. Our contributions aimed to address the following question: “What are the recommended techniques and approaches to verify the authenticity of text content generated by Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) systems to strengthen the fight against the spread of disinformation from a human rights perspective?” Our contribution aimed to offer a way out of this challenge by adopting a human rights-based approach.
